A hostile world

The Phare de Goury is a lighthouse that is always surrounded by a more or less significant white swell, and stands proudly off the coast of Auderville. It is 50 metres high and was first put into operation in 1837. Before that, in just one year, 27 boats had disappeared in this area. One of the strongest currents in Europe, the Alderney Race is located just opposite. Between the Cap de la Hague and the island of Alderney, the treacherous “Passage de la Déroute” is known by all sailors for its violent storms and strong currents. This brutal world is a stark contrast to the poetic world described by French poet Prévert. “The Alderney Race is a hostile world” says Cédric, a lobster fisherman. “There are always waves here, even when there’s no wind”.

It is always a fantastic sight to see a storm off Goury port. The waves create sea foam which turns the sea white. Even when the sea becomes calmer, the surrounding landscapes remain dramatic and powerful.
