The south coast of Cotentin

Between the marshland, Norman “bocage” farmland, coast and heathland, the local wildlife here flourishes, much to the delight of nature lovers.

The Cotentin marshland, a regional natural park and bird reserve

Vast meadows where race horses and cattle graze, with rivers crossing through, flowing into the huge estuary of the Baie des Veys, where a colony of seals has chosen to take up residence.

In the winter, the skies and water blend together and the marshland is covered in water. It is said that the marshland “whitens” during this period and we understand why the locals of the Cotentin peninsula call this the “marais blanc” (white marshland).

The varied landscapes of Norman “bocage” farmland, heathland and coast mean that the Parc Naturel Régional des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin boasts a wonderful diversity of flora and fauna.

This rural inhabited area has therefore been recognised on a national scale for the significant value of its natural and cultural heritage. Taking into account both the living countryside and its protection, the area aims to showcase this valuable heritage via innovative initiatives.
